Learning Vastu’

It was years ago, when I was a rookie sales agent, that I was introduced to the Hindu Cultural tradition of Vastu’.  As I recall, one day I was showing homes to a new referral.  We saw many homes and some were quite nice, updated to perfection; light and bright, all the features that typical home buyers desire.

However, a response I heard quite often was “Can we PASS on this one?”   I said “But we didn’t even go in yet!  Bewildered, I asked “Please tell me, why are these particular homes not appealing to you; the comments on MLS seem to match your criteria to a T.“

“Patrick, the front door is facing south!“

“Whoa, wait a minute.  You won’t buy a house with a South facing door?”

“Yes, that is right.”  East, North, sometimes West, but very rarely South.” 

“How interesting, is there anything else that I need to know?” 

“Matter of fact, there is!”

Here is what I learned about a home with good Vastu’...

​

          Home is facing East or North; exactly NorthEast is best!

          Home is well positioned on the lot, an equal portion of front yard and back yard. 

          Lot is a rectangular or square shape, flat, with the NorthEast corner being 90.

          Kitchen is well balanced in center of home

          No water source in SouthWest corner of the house and lot; i.e., bathroom, pool, fountain.

          Stove should not face South.

          Beds should never face South, etc.

These are just a few of the characteristics that make a home very desirable to a person of the Hindu faith.  

 

That’s not all!

After I help find the right home, I make sure we prepare paperwork on an auspicious day. 

Then after a successful acceptance of an offer, I am typically able to obtain permission from the owners to hold the Puja; a Hindu ceremony blessing the home for the family.
